Doctors Treat Infertility

Infertility can be treated with medicine, surgery, artificial insemination, or assisted reproductive technology. Many times these treatments are combined. In most cases infertility is treated with drugs or surgery.

IN- VITRO FERTILIZATION & EMBRYO TRANSFER (IVF- ET)

Fertilization

Initially IVF was used for a women with blocked fallopian tubes. However now it is used for wide range of problems like:
• Advanced age
• Low or absent sperm count
• Women with unexplained infertility unable to conceive with other treatments
• Polycystic ovaries with failed other treatment options
• Endometriosis

Fertility Treatments

• Transvaginal ultrasound to assess the uterine health. Also we check the number of antral follicles in the ovaries.
• We measure the serum AMH,Thyroid hormone,Hb and blood sugar.
• We do a hysteroscopy in all women in the month before the planned cycle unless it has been done in the last 6 months.
• The injections are to be taken daily.

INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is an infertility treatment that is often called artificial insemination. In this procedure, the woman is injected with specially prepared sperm. Sometimes the woman is also treated with medicines that stimulate ovulation before IUI. IUI is often used to treat: • Mild male factor infertility • Women who have problems with their cervical mucus • Couples with unexplained infertility

Steps of IUI

• Ultrasound in the beginning of the menstrual cycle
• Medications in the form of tablets and/or injections are started from the second day of menstrual cycle.
• Follicle monitoring is done by serial ultrasounds.
• Once the follicle is 18-20mm in size and the endometrium is 8mm or more, an hcg injection (human chorionic gonadotropins) is administered.
